Hypnosis Techniques: Indirect Suggestion
This type of hypnotic suggestion often involves the use of metaphors. They can also involve general suggestions that allow the subject to use their own mind to formulate an answer to the issue or problem. The use of indirect suggestions can sometimes be used to bypass conscious or unconscious resistance to a direct suggestion.
Here's an example of the use of an indirect suggestion. Let's say a couple are having sexual problems involving premature climax. A metaphor involving eating a meal where the meal is eaten slowly with deliberation with the intention of savoring the taste of each wonderful morsel of food might be used rather than a direct suggestion (confronting the sexual problem) that might provoke awkward or embarrassing feelings. The mind can then connect the dots and help to solve the problem on its own while avoiding embarrassment or defensiveness.
